Jet structure in pp and Pb-Pb collisions with the ALICE experiment

چکیده
We report results from the ALICE collaboration on jet production and jet properties in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. The charged particle jet production cross-section and measurements of jet fragmentation and jet shape in pp collisions at √ s = 7 TeV are presented. The results are confronted with simulations from Monte Carlo event generators. Measurements of charged particle jets in Pb-Pb collisions at √ sNN = 2.76 TeV with resolution parameter R = 0.2 and R = 0.3 show a strong momentum dependent suppression in central relative to peripheral collisions. The analysis of the semi-inclusive distribution of charged particle jets recoiling from a high-pT trigger hadron allows an unbiased measurement of the jet structure for larger cone radii. No significant redistribution of the energy flow inside the jet cone is observed. Di-hadron correlations allow to assess jet structure at very low particle momenta. For 2 < pT,trig < 3 GeV/c and 1 < pT,assoc < 2 GeV/c, a strongly asymmetric near-side correlation, broader in ∆η than ∆φ, is observed.

From light- to heavy-quark fragmentation in jets: current measurements in pp collisions with the ALICE detector and perspectives
The goal of the ALICE experiment at the LHC is to investigate the properties of the high-density state of strongly-interacting matter produced in Pb–Pb collisions. Partons propagating in a coloured medium interact with it leading to a softening of the parton pT spectrum. The parton fragmentation function can be influenced by in-medium interactions leading to particle dependent modifications. Fr...

Global event observables are of fundamental importance in characterizing the properties of the strongly interacting medium created in heavy-ion collisions. The ALICE experiment at LHC measured charged particle multiplicity distributions in Pb-Pb collisions at √ sNN = 2.76 TeV in a wide pseudo-rapidity range (−5 < η < 5.5) exploiting different techniques. The production of high transverse moment...

Heavy-ion collisions will enter a new era with the start of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A first short run with proton-proton collisions at the injection energy of 0.9 TeV will be followed by a longer one with pp collisions at 10 TeV. First Pb-Pb collisions at √ sNN=5.5 TeV will take place in 2009. Three experiments (ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS) will study both pp and Pb-Pb collisions. A sel...
